Rethymno which is the capital of the prefecture is a popular tourist destination. It is a picturesque city located in a scenic and diverse landscape. The old town of Rethymno was built during the Venetian period, and has several very interesting and historical places to explore such as the castle which is called Fortezza, the Venetian harbor and the traditional alleys

PARKING IN THE CITY OF RETHYMNO
Note that it is not easy to find a free parking space in Rethymno so you might have to park in a public parking area where you have to pay but the rate is very low (about 3 euros for 2-3 hours). Some of these paid parking spaces are:

Another amazing awarded restaurant but also value for money is a few minutes away from Rethymno to the south, it is located at a vilage called Armenoi and it is called "Alekos". This is one of our favorites!!!
Also, on your way to Rethymno, 15 minutes from the house, there is a very famous restaurant which offers an extended menu with traditional dishes, great quality and also value for money , called "Zisi's tavern":
